FIRE AND SAFETY PRODUCTS
FIRE:
The chemical reaction of "HEAT, OXYGEN, and FUEL".
four things must be present at the same time in order to produce fire,
1) Enough oxygen to sustain combustion,
2) Enough heat to raise the material to its ignition temperature,
3) some sort of feul or combustible material,
4) the chemical, exothermic reaction that is fire.
oxygen, heat,and fuel are frequently referred to as the "fire triangle" add in the fourth element, the chemical reaction, and you actually have a fire "tetrahedron." the important thing to remeber is; take any of these four things away, and you will not have a fire or the fire will be extinguised.
Theye are five types of fire: they are
A- SOLID FIRE - Eg; paper,wood,cloth,plastics.
B- LIQUID FIRE - Eg: petrol, disel, oli, grease.
C- GAS FIRE - Eg; LPGgas.
D- METAL FIRE - Eg;potassium,soudium,aluminium,magnesium.
E- ELECTRICAL FIRE -
1) COOLING,
2) STARVATION,
3) BLANKETING.
(Eg; sand, water, fire extinguisher's.)
HOW TO USE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER;
PULL THE PIN;
This will allow you to dischange the extinguisher.
AIM;
Aim at the base of the fire if you aim at the fiames(which is frequently the temptation)
the extinguishing agent will fly right through and do no good. you want to hit the fuel.
SQUEEZE:
Squeeze the top handle or lever. This depresses a button that releases the pressurized extinguishing agent in the extinguisher.
SWEEP:
Sweep from side to side untill the fire is completely out. start using the extinguisher from a safe distance away, then move forward. once the fire is out, keep an eye on the area in case it re-ignites.
WHAT TO DO WHEN FIRE STRIKES:
1) If paper, clothses, wood etc, catches fire pour water on them to put out the flame.
2) Most of the kitchen fire is due to oil or grease. never pour water on a grease fire.it will explode and spread the fire faster. if a pan on the stove and put a lid on pan
3) In case of an electrical fire, switch off the mains and then put sand on it. never pour water on a live wire/circuit. you would get electrocuted.
4) If your clothes catch fire, pour water if available. If not,stop where you are drop to the ground and roll. DO NOT RUN as it will fan the flames. Teach your children the correct procedure.
5) In case of a big fire, alert every one to leave at once. Do not wait to collect your papers or possessions. Use stairways, not lifts while moving out. Once you are out, contact the fire brigade immediately.
6) If you are trapped in a smoke-filled room get down immediately in all force and crawl to safe area. Crawling helps you remain in a relatively smoke-free zone which exists "12 to 24" above groundlevel. Cover your mouth and nose with a wet cloth if possible. Even clear air is not very safe as it could contain carbon monoxide which affects judgement and hampers escape.
7) In case of minor burns, pour water on the burn till it subsides. For serious burns, contact the doctor at once. Never apply oil or greasy substance on them. Do not apply any oinment without consulting the doctor.
RULES FOR FIGHTING FIRE :
Fires can be very dangerous and you shoud always be certain that you will not endanger yourself or others when attempting to put out a fire. for this reason, when a fire is discovered:
SOUND THE ALARM:
If you discover or suspect a fire, sound the building fire alarm. if there is no alarm in the building, warn the other occupants by knocking on doors and shouting as you leave.
CALL THE FIRE DEPARTMENT :
Dial-121. give as much information as possible to the emergency dispatcher.
